Welcome to the 2016 Spring Opener Edition of What’s on track for North Jersey 

It appears as though Spring has Sprung. Wet weather, albeit a bit on the colder side, has made its way onto our beloved asphalt. A few sunny days have broken their way through providing for a great running escape. The staff here is quite confident that in the not to distant future we will see many more days like this. As we look forward to the great weather to come let’s start planning our events week..end in… week…end out!

Come April 9th the Easter Seals chapter of NJ will rock Metlife Stadium like a Superhero provided their annual Walk with Me & USATF 5K Run. Want to get a chance to “run out that tunnel” onto the Jets/Giants playing field.. this is your chance! Be a hero to those with disabilities and special need in NJ and fulfill two dreams in a single day!

The following weekend it’s time to show some “green” (the color of money and the schools colors) and support the Kinnelon Education Association.

04/17 Kinnelon Education Association – Pot of Gold 5K – SHOW SOME “GREEN” ALONG WITH YOUR SUPPORT!

The 23rd/24th weekend cracks the running season wide open! There are multiple events in a 25-mile radius.

04/23 Alexander’s Run, Trenton – Memorial Run for Alexander Michael Dodson, a healthy, happy 19 1/2-month-old toddler who passed away in his sleep December 2008 to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC).

04/23 Rev IT Up 5K, Sparta – Wot4NJ Editor’s Choice for April!

Main Street Events is thrilled to manage the 18th Annual USATF-sanctioned Grand Prix Event, Rev It Up 5K/10K Festival & Fitness Expo! The event will take place Saturday, April 23, starting at 9:30 a.m. The event will benefit the Sparta P.A.L., and will be held in the new Sparta P.A.L. Building.

This year’s event promises to be exciting! A brand new drone will grace the skies at the start and finish lines, providing free pictures for all who finish the event. In addition, there will be a family fun fitness expo, music on the course, free food, a pre-race pasta dinner, and packet pick up, stocked goodie bag for registered participants, a free t-shirt, and the ability to follow your friends with the free RaceJoy app.

The Sparta P.A.L. was started in the 1960s by Fred Geffken, a former Sparta police chief. The mission was to provide an opportunity for police officers and Sparta youth to interact positively, collaborating in athletics and fun! Today, the Sparta P.A.L. is led by the current Chief of Police, Ernest Reigstad, and provides programs for boys’ and girls’ basketball, volleyball, fencing, and many other activities. In addition, the organization partners with the Sparta Police Department to sponsor the Sparta Police Youth Division, approximately 150 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders who participate in community service projects, anti-drug programs, and anti-violence programs in Sparta Township.

The Festival & Fitness Expo is sure to be great! The events start at the main entrance and run through the Sparta H.S. grounds to the scenic residential Ratcliff Rd loop and back. The Rev It Up Run sponsor will provide a motivational kick at their auto care center at the turn-a-round with some halfway refreshments. The 10K will continue up West Mountain Rd and back to the Ratcliff loop, and then back to the P.A.L. area. Participants and spectators can enjoy incredible freebies including massage, food from Bagel Station and Villa Capri II, hydration stations product sampling, a bounce house, kiddie Merry Go Round, door prizes, big giveaways, and more! Over thirty vendors will be in attendance, including experts in fitness, Zumba warm-ups, nutrition, family recreation, and much more! Over 120 custom medals and watches will be awarded, divided by age group. The top three male and female runners have a chance to win special awards! The grand prize winner will receive a propane grill, courtesy of Eastern Propane.

Feed your appetite before the race with the Pasta Party & Packet Pickup event, sponsored by Villa Capri II. On Friday, April 22, the event will run from 5-8 p.m.

The Rev It Up Run for Fun will start at 9 a.m., and will be held at Sparta P.A.L. Building at 38 Station Rd., in Sparta. Free shuttle service for participants and spectators is available on race day from 8 a.m. until noon at Station Park or Kids Castle Park, courtesy of Sussexpress Shuttle on race day from 8:00 a.m. through noon. 04/24 Hasbrouck Heights Board of Health 5K – Community 5K run by the Board of Health. If you like a challenge this is the race for you!

04/24 BPC – Chocolate 5K – Ladies!!! The Chocolate run is just north of Bergen County but well worth it! Capped at 400 participants you’ll want to secure your place ASAP! Read on to see exactly how sweet this 5K is!

The Chocolate 5K starts with a scenic course which takes you through the picturesque roads of New Windsor and Cornwall, NY with the addition of a small cross country trail segment (very unique for a 5K race!). Expect this chocolate themed event to spoil you positioning your chocolate favorites at varying points throughout the experience. You will find chocolates in your commemorative race bag, on the course, at the finish line, and the post-race breakfast celebration. This unique breakfast is offered to all registered 5K Run/Walk participants (complimentary) and features eggs, sausage, decadent chocolate & chocolate chip pancakes —- and of course —- chocolate fountain stations with various dipping foods. Got a sweet tooth! This race has your name written all over it!

04/24 Radburn PTA 5K – Run to help fuel the PTA Fitness Fund which is utilized to promote wellness and the benefits of “activity and movement” for the children of the community at large. 

04/24 North Haledon PTO – Rock n’ Run for Education – A Rockin 5K supporting the North Haledon Parent Teacher Organization. Free concert featuring Soul Runner and others from START to FINISH! Not one to miss! The 5K course is a tad challenging on the way out but is incredibly fast on the way back! The event boasts a number of live bands along the course with a post-race concert by the local talent. This 5K really rocks! 

04/30 Kid’s Therapy Fund sponsored by Advanced Sports Medicine – This is a sleeper event that ran it first annual in the Summer 2015 and is now finding its way back to the mainstream. Please, check out their website that is presently being updated as we tell you about it!

5/1 4th Annual Challenger 5k Run/Walk – Come help support the Valley Middle School PTO through their annual 5K Run/Walk. The event promotes health and fitness while bringing families and the local community together to help raise funds needed to purchase technology, enhance student programs, and provide improvements to Oakland, NJ schools. This is a great event for all ages, and fitness levels. Music, food and Fun for all! 

5/7 Mary Therese Rose Fund 5K Run/Walk – Come run on behalf of Mary Therese Rose Crilly, reclaiming the joys of childhood all while supporting Joubert Syndrome research. If you’d like to know more about the Mary Therese Rose Fund please visit their website.

5/7 O.S.C.A.R. 5K-9 Run & 1K Fido Fun Run – One Step Closer Animal Rescue (O.S.C.A.R.) in Sparta, New Jersey, is a non-profit rescue organization that saves dogs and cats from desperate situations. They rescue pets from overcrowded shelters where animals are euthanized due to lack of space. O.S.C.A.R. volunteers care for these pets in our network of foster homes where they receive the loving care they deserve. They ensure that all pets in their care receive the proper veterinary attention and vaccinations and that the animals are spayed/neutered. All of O.S.C.A.R.’s dogs and cats are great animals that deserve loving homes. Just check out their website and they’ll see you on race day!

5/7 Ringwood Educational Foundation – Shepherd Lake 5K – The Ringwood Educational Foundation is proud to present its 15th annual 5K Run and 1 Mile Family Fitness Walk at beautiful Shepherd Lake in Ringwood, NJ. The race begins in front of the 74-acre lake and continues through the parks into Skylands Manor Botanical Gardens. The race course goes past the manor house originally built in the 1920s. May is a wonderful time of year to take advantage of the spectacular elegance of the gardens and haven of the woods. All money raised by REF for this event is used in our mission to enhance and enrich the public educational experience of our Ringwood students.

Race Directors! Be sure to place your event brochures in one of the Tristate Timing Events brochure holders that have popped up in North Jersey! Currently, brochure holders are available at the Ridgewood Racefaster store, the Sneaker factory in Florham Park and at the Paramus Road Runner Sports. Thanks Brendan (pictured below) for making this happen!

Many of those that read this newsletter frequent the various timer schedules in the area to see what’s on track. If you are in North Jersey you’ll find a number of the local events throughout the area on these two calendars. Definitely, one to bookmark on your mobile device and check often when that running itch needs some scratching!!!
